RIP Jack LaLanne (1914-2011)

More than just a Power Juicer pitchman, Jack LaLanne passed away today at his home. He was 96. LaLanne is best known to older audiences as the host of The Jack LaLanne Show, which ran for 34 years (1951–1985) and is still the longest running exercise and fitness series ever on television.

He was a home fitness guru. A master at teaching people how to exercise and stay in shape in the comfort of their living rooms. He was always kind, always encouageing, and always up for a fitness challenge, which he constantly took on throughout his life.

For example, on his 70th birthday in 1984, LaLanne, handcuffed, shackled and fighting strong winds and currents, towed 70 boats with 70 people from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary for one mile. Many other feats of strength involved swimming while towing large objects or weights across a large body of water.

Along with his numerous health products, books, exercise programs, and feats of strength, LaLanne also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has been inducted into the California Hall of Fame.

Thank you, Mr. LaLanne, for motivating us to eat healthy, be healthy, and exercise. Rest in peace.

Here’s a clip from his TV show, which apparently airs on ESPN Classic:
