Top Five Releases for January: Film

Hey guys we decided that every month we will be launching a Top Five list of releases for films (DVD and Theatrical), video games, music and any other stuff we like. Enjoy!

1. The Social Network (Blu-ray/DVD release date: Available Now!) – The incredible telling of how Facebook came to be as only David Fincher could deliver it. The film based off the novel “The Accidental Billionaires” is the story of Mark Zuckerberg; portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, a cold calculated businessman who only wishes to ensure a better future for himself. His friend Eduardo Saverin, played brilliantly by Andrew Garfield, wants to keep it simple, life and the Facebook. Until they meet Sean Parker; played by Justin Timberlake, the founder of Napster, who then proceeds to hurtle Facebook into mainstream society. The film as a whole takes you on the wild ride of backstabbing, dark alley deals and manipulations in a brilliant fashion. In short, if you are looking for the film that defines this generation, you need not look further.

2. Dances with Wolves 20th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray/DVD release date Available Now!) – This film is a classic story of betrayal, love, and fighting for what you think is right when it goes against what you believed initially. Kevin Costner delivers the performance of a lifetime of a soldier who does his very hardest to discern what is right and wrong during the Civil War, when he falls in love with a white woman who was raised by Indians. A film that has collected many awards in its time including the 1991 Best Picture Academy Award, this is surely one to add to your collection. With features like commentary by Kevin Costner and a documentary on the original filming of Dances with Wolves, this is an anniversary Blu-Ray/DVD you cannot afford to miss out on.

3. Buried (Blu-ray/DVD release date: Available Now) – A gripping thriller, Ryan Reynolds, a coffin, and 94 minutes. That is simply what Buried contains. After waking up in a coffin, unaware of how or why, Paul Conroy does everything he can to survive. While running out of time he struggles to unravel the truth in why he was trapped and how to escape this prison. After being purchased at Sundance Film Festival, this particular piece of work was released in limited theaters where it received quite the buzz. How many actors can carry an entire film in a box and enthrall the audience? Ryan Reynolds did, and to say it was breathtaking would just be an understatement. But to put it all on Ryan Reynolds acting wouldn’t be fair. With a power-house script this film drags you down 6 feet under for an unforgettable ride.

4. The Company Men (In Theaters Now!) – The Company Men, being mostly about the way corporations can easily let someone go and continue on thriving while others suffer, seems to be a powerful and fitting drama for our period of time. Last year a film titled Up In the Air did something very similar but not with the emotion backing this. Showing the struggle for the family as well as the self loathing that comes with a loss of a career is devastating and Ben Affleck looks to be in rare form in this incredible drama about loss, gain and the potential for happiness. Not to mention with other actors, Tommy Lee Jones and Kevin Costner, the hard hitting drama is shaping up to be an extremely buzz worthy film.

5. No Strings Attached (In Theaters Now!) –With the original title being “F*ckbuddies” I feel that this film will retain a very edgy look at how many modern couples are handling a just sex relationship. Telling the story of Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman dealing with a coitus only relationship, No Strings Attached, is going to be one of the most talked about romantic comedies of this year. Many people are either in one of these relationships or have had experience and therefore this shall hit home for them. With the typical roles reversed though and Ashton Kutcher pining for Natalie Portman, this is looking to be a fun time at the theaters while still affirming the idea that love exists. A lighthearted film, which everyone can find something to appreciate about.
