So, I went into this film with very low expectations. I had had heard or read so many bad things about this film that I really wasn’t sure what I was about to sit down and watch. Now, I like Nicolas Cage. I think he is a good actor and I have enjoyed him is many films including The Rock and the National Treasure movies. I was hoping this film would be on the level of those films and not The Wicker Man.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice lies somewhere in the middle. It’s campy, cheesy, and silly, but overall it’s harmless fun. There are plenty of dazzling special effects, some very funny moments, and the cast appears to be having a good time. While it’s not in the same level as, say, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, it’s certainly not Meet the Deedles or Mr. Magoo.
Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel (She’s Out of My League) work well together, but Baruchel’s awkward schtick does grow tiresome at times. Alfred Molina (who was also in Prince of Persia) does a great job as a sorcerer gone bad.
Toss in a lost of cool special effects, one-liners, and an homage to the famous “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” sequence from Fantasia (1940) featuring Mickey Mouse and it’s a safe film to watch with the family.

While it’s not perfect by any means, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is worth a look.
