Syfy Digital Press Tour 2010: Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files

Ben Hansen, Bill Murphy and Jael De Pardo, three of Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files’ hosts made it out to the Syfy Panel. They were present to speak about the second half of the first season of the show and the processes that they go through in deciding whether a case is real or not.

The show is based around a team of specialists that set out to uncover the truth behind some of the most compelling, mystifying and seemingly unexplainable images caught on camera and posted on the Internet. The team is made up of former FBI Special Agent Ben Hanse, lead scientist Bill Murphy, journalist Jael De Pardo, effects specialist Larry Caughlin, photography expert Chi-Lan Lieu and stunt expert Austin Porter.

The team spoke about the way they go about deciding which pictures and videos they choose to test and why they choose the ones that they do. They spend a large amount of team searching the Internet for videos that they feel are legitimate and decide whether or not they are going to pursue the story. Once they have decided that a story is interesting or believable enough, they set out to test whether it is real or fake.

One of the questions that was asked during the panel was whether or not there are instances in which team members disagree on whether or not they think a certain story is true or not and what happens when they have disagreements. They mentioned that there were many times in which they were unable to find a conclusive answer as to whether or not it was true faked although it was their job to decide on one of them. They said that their biggest challenge during the show is the amount of time they get to spend on each story as sometimes they feel they are very close to reproducing one of the videos but simply don’t have enough time to research new ideas or tactics for reproduction.

The series returned on October 28th on Syfy and airs on Thursdays at 10pm ET.
