Modern Family: The Complete First Season – DVD Review

Funny, funny stuff! Modern Family is one of those shows that came out of the blue and ended up being the first comedy series in a long time to take down the pretentious 30 Rock at the Primetime Emmys this year for Outstanding Comedy Series. Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan (Wings, Frasier, Just Shoot Me!), the show is and clever and very funny look at the lives of three unique “families” that are related in one way or another.

Most notable among the cast, and the person TV fans will recognize immediately, is Ed O’Neill who played women’s shoe salesman Al Bundy for 11 seasons on one of my favorite shows, Married…with Children. While it’s hard for actors who are well-known for a specific role to rise above said role, O’Neill does an excellent job here. And so does the rest of the cast.

So, what’s Modern Family about? With a format that’s similar to The Office, the show takes a “documentary-style” look at a modern suburban family. This includes a typical nuclear family, a gay couple, and a multicultural family. With the use of interviews woven into the framework of each episode, we get a sense of who these characters are on a more personal level.

By far my favorite episode is “Fizbo,” but there are many other solid episodes that will have you laughing and having a great time. Modern Family is definitely worth watching.

Special features include: The Making of Modern Family: “Family Portrait; Deleted Family Interviews; Real Modern Family Moments; Fizbo the Clown; Before Modern Family; Deleted, Extended, & Alternate Scenes; Modern Family “Hawaii; and a Gag Reel.
