FlashForward: The Complete Series – DVD Review

When I found out FlashForward had been cancelled I was NOT a happy camper. I really enjoyed this series; thought it had the potential to be the next Lost (but with better CGI). However, like a lot of shows recently, it wasn’t given a fair shake and ended up being kicked off ABC’s schedule before it had a chance to really grow as a series.

It wasn’t like Lost where you knew it would have to end eventually. It was just getting started, the characters becoming familiar, and the situations developing into “why the hell are there so many commercials?!” moments. It’s too bad it had to end so abruptly.

So what’s the basic premise? On October 6, the planet blacked out for two minutes and seventeen second. The whole world saw the future six months ahead. Now, everyone must try and decide if they will accept their fate six months from now, or attempt to change the future already presented to them.

If you missed FlashForward when it was on TV, this is your chance to see the show in its entirety. With only one season to its name the series flies by.

With a stellar cast, which includes Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), John Cho (Harold & Kumar), Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings trilogy; Lost), and Sonya Walger (Lost), FlashForward included some great performances from its ensemble. It’s a shame we won’t be able to see farther into the lives of these characters.

The pilot alone is an amazing piece of television. There are so many crazy, wild, and exciting moments that you may want to watch it twice just to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

At times as complicated in its story structure as Lost, FlashForward was a creative and clever method of storytelling. We already knew what was coming, we just didn’t how it events would lead to that point. It’s a shame the show was cancelled.

The FlashForward DVD has some great special features, including: Architects of Destiny; FlashForward On Set; Meet Yuko; Kangaroo?; Interviews from the Mosaic Collective; Creating Catastrophe: The Effects of a Global Blackout; FlashForward: A Look Ahead; Bloopers; Deleted Scenes; and Audio Commentary on select episodes. If you’ve never seen the show some these features’ titles will make more sense after you watch the series.

I highly, highly recommend you check out FlashForward. It’s a compelling, exciting, and thrilling series that perished way before it should have. At least we have one season to enjoy.

FlashForward: The Complete Series is available August 31, 2010 on DVD!
