S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Announced, Goes Multi-Platform

I said come in! Don’t just stand there!

GSC Game World, creators of the STALKER line of games (I’m not putting all those dots now, you got the point), have just confirmed something the fan community long suspected: that STALKER 2 is under development! If that leaves you confused, then you just have to assume that Clear Skies and Call of Pripyat weren’t really sequels to Shadow of Chernobyl, but just stand-alone expansion packs, of sorts. According to GSC, this game will be the official sequel to the whole series.

Unlike what rumours suggested, we have no confirmation of it being powered by CryENGINE. Rather, GSC Game World will be making a whole new engine for the new STALKER game. It will also be the first multi-platform STALKER game, which has already roused suspicion in the STALKER fanbase, who cherish the game for being one of the few hardcore PC franchises in existence. Hopefully they won’t consolise the game, GSC Game World have shown themselves to be very capable PC developers.

In a mere three years since the first game came out, STALKER has had three full games and an entire slew of fan modifications, thanks to the amazingly flexible engine. Graphics enhancements are released even today, which take the dated-looking game into looking even better than some games coming out lately. One of GSC’s biggest challenges, in my opinion, will be creating an engine that, apart from being multiplatform, still retains the moddability of the original.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is to be released in 2012.

That’s still 2 years off, so you’d better get around to playing all the STALKERs and their mods if you haven’t already.
