War Never Changes, and that’s a Good Thing

A preview of the highly anticipated Fallout: New Vegas!

It has only been a year and a half since the magnificence of Fallout 3 was dropped on us. Since then, we have been treated to five expansion packs that have taken players to new areas of the US and to the bowels of an alien craft. Since the release of Fallout 3, fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of the next Fallout title, and with Bethesda Softworks promising another, the time could not come soon enough. With a Fallout MMO in the works from Interplay, and a court battle going on between the two (more info here), wanderers of the wastelands of Fallout thought that this wait was going to get longer. But last April, Bethesda Announced Fallout: New Vegas. This new title, which is actually being made by Obsidian Entertainment, and being published by Bethesda, was then teased a few months ago with this very Fallout-esque teaser trailer, which you can view here:

But today, some of the first details were announced for Fallout: New Vegas! Josh Sawyer, New Vegas’ Project Director, spoke about some of the changes we will see in Fallout: New Vegas. The first thing noticeable is that this game looks very similar to Fallout 3. This leads me to think that this game might not be the next game in the series, but more of a GTA: Vice City or San Andreas to GTA 3. That being said, it still looks very awesome.

The game takes place in the Mohave Wasteland three years after Fallout 3. The main city in the game?…. yeah. Las Vegas.

This game also has you start already grown,… but dead. In the beginning, you are actually killed, and then brought back to life. It is at this phase that you create your character. So no, you will not have to crawl around in a baby sequence… as fun as that can be… .

My favorite new feature? Customizable weapons. Need better range and accuracy? Add a scope. Need more ammo? Extended mags!

Another cool feature is that they developers did away with the nagging conversations that you would have with you companions in Fallout 3. I felt it annoying to have to go through repetitious conversation with Dogmeat just to give him a Stimpak. Now, all you have to do is open a wheel, and select the action, doing away with the talking.

Probably the biggest addition to the game is the Reputation System. If you played Fallout 1 or 2, you could actauly gain reputation with factions. They are bringing this back to New Vegas, which is going to add an extensive amount of gameplay and quests for each faction. I’m sure this will also make it more difficult to earn achievements or trophies, since you could potentially miss out if you are factioned with the wrong party.

This small preview has made me super excited for this game. It is slated for a Fall 2010 release. So, now I’m going to have to go back and play Fallout 3 for the third time through since I have to wait.
