Downey Jr. in New Sci-Fi Film

The Iron Man star will appear in director Alfonso Cuaron’s (Children of Men) new science fiction flick, Gravity.

Deadline New York, which broke the news, outlined some of the upcoming film’s character and plot details.  Downey Jr. will play “the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.”  Angelina Jolie was originally slated to play the aforementioned female character until Universal dropped the project.

Downey Jr. (who has apparently claimed the late James Brown’s title as the “hardest working man in show business”) will shoot the 3D space drama this summer before re-teaming with director Guy Ritchie for the sequel to last fall’s Sherlock Holmes.
