Fright Night Remake Gets a Director

Craig Gillespie will direct DreamWorks’ remake of the cult classic vampire flick.

The original Fright Night (1985) was a trailblazer of sorts for the horror genre.  The film, which starred Amanda Bearse (of Married… With Children fame) and Chris Sarandon (of “I so regret divorcing Susan Sarandon” fame), holds the distinction of being one of the first horror films to incorporate tongue-in-cheek comedy into the ghoulish proceedings.  This style would later become commonplace in movies like Shaun of the Dead and the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Considering this, it is perhaps no coincidence that former Buffy scribe Marti Noxon is penning the remake.

Gillespie himself is no stranger to unusual cinematic hybrids.  His most notable directorial effort, Lars and the Real Girl, successfully mixed romance with the always hilarious world of mental disorders.  Let’s just hope Gillespie’s remake is more the original Fright Night and less Fright Night Part 2.
