Scorsese’s ‘Island’ Takes Top Spot

The much-anticipated Shutter Island debuted with an estimated $40.2 million this weekend. The film, which was originally supposed to be released last year, stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic) as a detective searching for a missing asylum patient on a mysterious island. And no, they don’t flash through time, there’s no undead John Locke, and there’s no mention of the Oceanic Six.

Valentine’s Day still remained strong at #2 with $17.1 million, and ever-present Avatar returned to the top three after time away with $16.1 million. Rounding out the top five are Percy Jackson ($15.3 million), and The Wolfman ($9.8 million).

Will next week’s Cop-Out with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan shoot to #1? How much will Disney’s Alice in Wonderland in 3-D bring in when it opens March 5? Will it give Avatar a run for its money?
