‘Avatar’ Taken Down from Top Spot at Box Office

Say it ain’t so?! After a seven-week reign, Avatar was lost its top spot at the box office to the Nicholas Sparks romantic-drama, Dear John. The movie, which stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried made an estimated $32 mil. Avatar still held onto second with and estimated $23.6 mil. Travolta’s latest, From Paris With Love, came in third with a sorry-looking $8.1 mil.

But whether or not Avatar returns to #1 at the box office is a moot point. It’s not like its dropping to #2 will affect its dominion over the all-time world-wide box office record. I have my doubts that any other movie will come close to knocking it down from its $2.2 billion perch.

But now, we have an answer to the question of what film would remove Avatar from #1. I posted an article this past week asking this very question (click here for that one), and Dear John’s success surprised even me. I guess after multiple dates involving Avatar, it was time for the women to fight back. Take that blue people!

No matter what happens at the box office next weekend, or the weekends thereafter, audiences will continue to experience Avatar for months to come. I see no signs of it being pulled from theaters anytime soon.

What do you think? Will Valentine’s Day or The Wolfman take down Dear John and Avatar next weekend? Leave a comment with your thoughts!
