Life on Mars: The Complete Series – DVD Review

LifeonMarsDVD

Life on Mars is a unique, intriguing, and fascinating series that aired on ABC last spring. This short-lived crime-drama-fantasy lasted only a handful of episodes, but it’s definitely worth a look. An adaptation of the BBC series of the same name, Life on Mars takes the same concept and transports the show to 1973 New York City.

When NYPD Detective Sam Tyler (Jason O’Mara) is involved in a car accident, he suddenly finds himself transported from 2008 back into the 1970s. His sudden change of scenery and decade leaves him rightfully disoriented and confused, and he does what he can to cope with the bizarre circumstances that have befallen him.

What’s a 2008 cop to do? Join the 1973-era NYPD, of course. It’s a fish-out-of-water story to the nth degree as Tyler has to deal with the “rules and standards” of the NYPD that have noting to do with political correctness, and everything to do with nailing scumbags to the wall.

Along for the ride are some heavy-hitters including Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction, National Treasure), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), and Gretchen Mol (3:10 to Yuma). Life on Mars is an exciting ride that will leave you wanting more all the way to explosive series finale.

Life on Mars is loaded with special features, which include:

Audio Commentary on Selected Episodes

To Mars and Back

A look at how the producers took the BBC series and made it into an American-style series.

Flashback: Lee Majors Goes to Mars

Before he sold hearing aids, Lee Majors was the Six-Million Dollar Man on TV back in the 70s. Check out his time as his visit to the Life on Mars set and watch for pop-up trivia about the 1970s and Mr. Majors.

Spaced Out: Bloopers From the Set

It’s not all work. Sometimes you just have to screw up!

Deleted Scenes

I recommend Life on Mars. It’s an engaging and entertaining series that blends genres, and makes the audience actually try and piece the mystery of Tyler’s situation together along with him. You may also want to check out the BBC version and compare and contrast them in an essay of 500 words or less. This assignment will be graded. Good luck!
