No UMD conversion for PSPGo, dreams shattered

The PSPGo, while a sexy little handheld, has created some controversy because of its download only stance. Retailers have threatened to not sell it because of the download only feature. Current PSP owners are skeptical because of their current PSP games and the lack of being able to play them on the new PSP.

The hope of a UMD conversion for the PSPGo being announced at the TGS was crushed today. Despite announcing previously that they had intentions of allowing a conversion system at the E3, they have had to rescind that statement due to legal issues.

They are apparently looking into ways to rectify this issue, but it doesn’t look like there will be any solution by the time the handheld is launched on October first.

The only solution thus far is a weak one, allowing PSP owners who upgrade to get three free games from a list of 17. A PSP owner must connect their old PSP, with UMD in drive, to the PSN and sign up for the promo there. The list of free games is nice, but the lack of any conversion is troubling.
