I remember watching Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was a kid. My favorite episode involved a wax dummy of Dave, the Chipmunks thinking he was sick so they put the dummy out in the sun, and Wax Dave melting. Disturbing, but memorable. The only ep I vividly recall.
In Alvin and the Chipmunks Go to the Movies (1988), Alvin and the gang satirize three films: Star Trek, Dick Tracy, and Sherlock Holmes. Much like Muppet Babies was apt to do during the same time period, films that were aimed at more mature audiences are toned down into more kid-friendly fare. In this volume, you’ll find the following episodes: Star Wreck, Chip Tracy, and Elementary, My Dear Simon.
With the resurgence of Alvin and the Chipmunks on the big screen (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel will be in theatres soon), it’s only fitting that these classic cartoons would arrive on DVD to remind fans who grew up with the series just how fun these energetic rodents were.
I’ll admit, as an adult now the Chipmunk’s voices do become a tad grating at times. But I’m sure that’s just due to my old age. This is definitely safe for kids and families to watch together, and it’s always fun to see how the creative team behind these shows find new ways to spoof familiar material.
