Batman Beyond Miniseries incoming

The DC Animated Universe is, arguably, one of the best things to come out of Warner Brother’s animated branch in recent years. The last series to exist, to my knowledge, was the spin off(or sequel) of the Justice League TV series, Justice League Unlimited. The entire brand was kind of silently killed off with some shows with a similar art style made, but it didn’t really live on.

In the last year or so the DCAU has come back in the form of a few straight to DVD animated features, like Superman Doomsday, Batman: Gotham Knight, Justice League: The New Frontier, Wonder Woman and, more recently, Green Lantern: First Flight. None of these titles have continued the storylines from the TV series, but were largely great nonetheless.

Well Dan DiDio, Senior Vice President Executive Editor for DC, has said today that Batman Beyond, the TV series that takes the Batman Animated series a few dozen years into the future, is getting a mini-series. The exact quote is a bit sketchy in what exactly is meant.

“There will be a Terry McGinnis mini-series early next year. We’ve heard the fans, we’ve heard everyone’s interest. And right now we’re planning to put out a Batman Beyond mini-series in 2010.”

This could mean we’re going to be seeing a few animated episodes or a straight to DVD movie. What seems more likely is that they’re making a Batman Beyond comic mini-series. Neither would be particularly bad but it would be nice to see a little revival of the animated series.
