Dollhouse: Season One – DVD Review

Eliza Dushku is HOT! Of course, that’s an understatement when you get to watch her in episode after episode of this latest Joss Whedon creation, Dollhouse. Whedon, the creative mind behind Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, presents a world full of sexy women, sinister men, and ethical quandaries.

Dushku plays Echo, a woman whose life is constantly in flux. Is it due to her hectic and stressful environment? No. She’s the unwilling participant in a secret program that erases and reprograms young women’s minds. As a result, Echo and the others involved get a clean slate, but also can be programmed to do anything that their captors desire.

Each episode takes Dushku’s character, Echo, into new and oftentimes dangerous situations that her newly created identities thrive within. It’s only a matter of time, however, until the creation revolts against its creator. What happens when Echo discovers the truth about what’s going on? And what will she do to stop it and save others who have fallen victim?

The series gets off to a rocky start due to both tediousness and an incredibly slow pace. This is mainly due to the need to explain to the audience what is going on and a little about why. But as Echo unravels the truth about her situation, we also are let in on the plot that has stolen her life. As the season progresses, the episodes do become more exciting, sexier, and engaging.

As the summer winds down, take a look at season one of Dollhouse. With only a handful of episodes, it’s just what you need to get through the August slump before new episodes of this and other shows premiere.
