Springing from the mind of Jeff Lindsay from his book Darkly Dreaming Dexter and adapted for tv by James Manos Jr., the wonderful showtime series Dexter: Season One is now available for the first time on Blu-ray!
This exceptional television series about a slightly deranged forensics expert who murders murderers who’ve escaped justice from the legal system for whatever reason features a stellar cast of Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter (of The Exorcism of Emily Rose fame), Erik King, and James Reymar.
Having been orphaned at a young age, Dexter was raised by foster parents who he claims were as nurturing and caring as any parents could be. However, his police officer foster father Harry Morgan (as portrayed by James Remar), sensed a deeper ‘dark passenger’ within his son and decided to craft and focus his son’s homicidal tendencies towards those who deserved it rather than innocents. Having been coached in how to appear ‘normal’ in all forms of social etiquette, Dexter spends the majority of his time maintaining his relationships with his step sister Debra (who is played by Jennifer Carpenter), and his somewhat emotionally tarnished girlfriend Rita (who is played by Julie Benz). However, Dexter feels very little and has trouble feeling any true emotions. Into this equation is thrust another killer known as the Ice Truck Killer, whom Dexter appears to both admire and slightly threatened by the Trucker’s knowledge of Dexter’s past. Exciting hijinks ensue…
As for the Blu-ray version, there are a variety of “Killer BD-Live Special Features”, which feature: The Academy of Blood- A Killer Course, Witnessed In Blood- A True Murder Investigation, Michael C. Hall Podcast, The first episode from Dexter season 3 as well as the first two episodes of United States of Tara. Sadly these special features are only available for Blu-ray players that have the BD-LIVE feature, however there are commentary tracks for some of the episodes by the cast and crew. Ah well, still a spectacular presentation of the show on Blu-ray, and well worth the price!
