Xbox 360 Review: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Midway has been tweaking the Mortal Kombat franchise since day 1. With that the series has had its good times and its bad times. With its latest game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Midway has succeeded in taking the right step.

The twist in this title is that it continues DC Comic book characters. Everyone from Batman to Superman to the Flash are here. Even villains are playable too with The Joker and Catwoman. The premise is that the alternative universes of the Mortal Kombat and DC characters are merging together. It’s simplistic yet effective.

The story mode of the game allows players to choose which universe they want to play as. Sadly the stories within those realms are linear. You must win each battle in order to progress through the story. There are no story branches if your character loses. Within the story mode, you do not get to choose which character you play as. The game simply tosses the player between the assortment of characters.

There aren’t any mini-games to speak of. This really isn’t a bad thing considering that past Mortal Kombat mini-games usually are rushed and terrible games. Midway focused on the core gameplay of the story and fighting mode, and it shows, even if the fatalities aren’t as brutal as previous games – it’s a ‘T’ rated game for a reason.

The graphics are pretty darn impressive, both in-game and cutscene. It is easily the best looking game that features DC characters to date.

The only thing that is lacking, other than the ESRB ‘M’ rating, is the 90’s techno rave music. Can you tell that I love the original Mortal Kombat film soundtrack?

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is not a leap of improvement from its predecessors, but if Midway can continue the series in this direction, fans of the series will be extremely happy.
