Before he wore a dress, a rubber latex body suit, and starred in 2007’s Hairspray, John Travolta danced and sang his way through the hit 1978 musical Grease. Thirty years later, Grease still offers its audience high-energy musical numbers, great characters, and hip dialogue. If you like musicals, and even if you don’t, you’ll find Grease to be an essential part of your film collection.

We’re gonna party like it’s the 1950s as bad-boy Danny Zuko (a leather jacketed Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Newton-John) fell in love over summer. Problem is, both run in different circles. Zuko is a punk, Sandy’s a goody-two-shoes, and they just discovered they now go to Rydell High! Oy vey! What’s a pair of opposites to do?

The answer: sing and dance your way to true love. Yes, in real life if you break out in a dance number in public no one else knows the moves, the song, and you’ll probably be committed, but in the case of a film like Grease, it’s all good.

The supporting cast only helps to accentuate the electricity between the two leads. And those who remember the movie when it first premiered will recognize film greats Eve Arden and Sid Caeser, and TV regulars Stockard Channing and Jeff Conway when they were younger, not in rehab, and alive.

If you have never seen Grease, you’re in for a treat. But be forewarned: DO NOT see Grease 2! Yes, it stars Michelle Pfeiffer, but so do a lot of superior films. So, kick back, relax, and remember that Grease is still the word!

Special features on this edition, and there have been many before this one, include a Rydell Sing-a-Long (follow the bouncing ball as you sing with Danny and Sandy on their pathway to love); deleted and extended scenes, highlights for the 25th anniversary DVD launch party; a retrospective with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John; and several other featurettes.

Grease: Rockin’ Rydell Edition gets and rockin’ and rollin’ A! The DVD comes in a sweater…but don’t try and wear it…it won’t be pretty (don’t ask me how I know!)

  1. Broadway shows are perhaps the best way to spend a fun evening with your friends and family, especially if the play is like Grease. Grease is has to be the best musical off all the time; for that I’m planning to get cheap tickets from Ticketsinventory, to have a great evening out with my friends. For sure, this will be one of the best evenings of my life!
