I love cartoons. Always have, always will. I can still watch Inspector Gadget, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original series), Disney’s TaleSpin, and Darkwing Duck, and the two other well-known Steven Spielberg Presents cartoon series Animaniacs and Freakazoid. I’m old enough to have watched Tiny Toon Adventures when it was first on TV back in the early 90s. It was funny, amusing, and entertaining when I was younger, and still has its moments today.

For those not in the loop, Tiny Toons follows the adventures of Babs and Buster Bunny and their friends as they work toward their Toon Degrees at Acme Looniversity. Acme Looniversity’s professors are familiar faces: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, etc, but all play a minor role in this series. Babs, Buster and company drive the bulk of the series.

Like the old Looney Tunes cartoons, each episode of Tiny Toons is broken into three or four stories (or mini-sodes) that revolve around one of the main or recurring characters. Each story has its own brand of comedy, but the main drive is broad slapstick, sight gags, and over-the-top facial expressions. While they do exist, in-jokes, celebrity satires, and more adult-level humor are more prominent in Animaniacs and Freakazoid than in Tiny Toon Adventures.

If you were a fan back then, you may find the pacing of the series a bit slow, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out. It’s fun to watch for nostalgia’s sake, and young kids today will enjoy it much like we did in the past. While The Simpsons and Family Guy have raised the bar on what animation can get away with, Tiny Toon Adventures promises good clean fun that can be watched with you younger brothers and sisters and even grandma.

The four disc DVD set contains 35 episodes and a short documentary that discusses the origins of Tiny Toon Adventures from concept to Emmy Award-winning cartoon series.

Overall, I give Tiny Toon Adventures a B. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment.
