Apple entering Handheld Console sector? iGame coming?

iGame?

Apple revolutionized the MP3 player sector with the iPod, made a mark on cellphones with the iPhone and it seems like its next stop is the handheld games industry! Wait, whuh? This doesn’t come in as an illogical move, seeing as the multimedia-rich iPhones and iPods were pretty good at playing movies and music and more in a handheld system. A gaming console looks like the next logical step in the progression. To find out what’s going on, hit the jump!

Apple recently filed to get their name on the following things:

Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games

That would mean that Apple is looking to invest in the handheld games industry and that means the two big players in that field, Sony and Nintendo have competition. With gaming coming to the unwashed masses and mainstream, Apple will be looking to connect handheld games with its iPod and iPhone-using population. And that equals win!

This makes us wonder whether Microsoft will follow its footsteps. Microsoft already showed off its answer to the iPod, uh, what’s it called again, ah right – the Zune. Apparently, didn’t go too well. Microsoft is already doing very well in primary consoles with its Xbox 360. Will it seek to hit its ages-old competitor in the handheld market?

Let us speculate in the shadows for now…
